About Antique Baseball Gloves

A baseball glove is a leather glove worn by the baseball players in the defending team to assist them to catching and fielding balls hit by the player in the opposite team. These gloves are composed of tanned hide of an animal. It is said that Doug Allison was the first player to use a baseball glove, in 1870 due to a left injured hand. Glove usage was not accepted by all players first considering it to be 'sissy' however it caught on as many players started wearing different kinds of gloves. Antique baseball gloves are made up of simple leather usually cut off at the tips of the fingers to get the same grip as of a bare hand with extra padding. The purpose of the first glove was to knock the ball to the ground and not necessarily catch it. In mid- 1890 wearing baseball gloves gad become a norm. A standard baseball glove is the one which has a web placed between the first finger and the thumb to create a pocket, this design was suggested by St Louis Cardinals in 1920. Today there are different kinds of baseball gloves such as Catcher's glove which have extra padding, pitcher's glove that have closed webbing, first basemen's gloves with no individual fingers, outfield gloves that are quite long to help catching fly balls on the run or on dive, so the player does not have to bend down as far to field a ground ball, and infield baseball gloves that allow the fielders to easily remove the ball from their gloves to make a quick throw to a base. To keep baseball gloves in good condition, care must be taken that they are kept away from heat, and if they get wet, they should be cleaned with a soft cloth.
