About Antiquities

Handling a real antiquity can bring the ancient world to life. This is probably one of the reasons that antiquities have been collected ever since the first European travelers visited ancient sites in the Near and Middle East. Throughout the years, millions of individual artifacts have reached private collections. The breakup of these collections comprise the majority of the antiquities circulating on the market today. Most of these objects were legally acquired, so they can be legally sold and bought today. Interest in the past is as old as the history of mankind. Roman emperors were reputed to have collected antiquities from previous civilizations. By the 16th century, collections of antiquities were built up by the ruling class in Europe. This can be attributed to the increase in European travel, which resulted in explorations of the ancient world from the 17th century onwards. Travelers on these expeditions brought back large numbers of Roman and Greek antiquities, as well as antiquities from throughout the world.Until 1983, when a law was passed making all antiquities discovered in Egypt property of the State, there were active antiquities markets in Egypt, Lebanon and Iran. Before this law was passed, thousands of Egyptian antiquities were exported from Egypt with full permission from the Egyptian authorities. Artifacts from different cultures are therefore in the collections of many private individuals. The reason that many of these artifacts do not end up in museums is because they are, for the most part, utilitarian in nature, and most museums already have objects that are quite similar. If they were donated, they would probably end up in the museum's basement. However, since these objects never fail to lose their charm, they make a fascinating addition to anyone's collection.
