About Botanical Print

Between the 17th century and 19th century, early botanists explored the wonders of plants through detailed botanical prints. These artists borrowed ideas from one another but essentially created their own methods and taxonomies to describe the natural world as it appeared to them. A number of the era's major cultural obsessions and ideas were superbly captured by botanical printers in their works. In 17th century Holland, a bizarre social movement swept over the land. For whatever reason, the tulip became incredibly popular. Tulipomania drove up the price of the flower in one of the most irrational bubbles ever to hit an economy of any sort. The Dutch artist, Jan Van Huysum, captured the quintessential beauty that provoked this national obsession in a series of sketches.Britain wasn't immune from such speculative surges of botanical interest. In the 1800s, horticulturalists in Great Britain became obsessed with orchids. Art Nouveau painters seized upon this idea and created many works of art involving orchids. One of the most celebrated depictions of these flowers occurs in John Nugent Fitch's seminal work, 'The Orchid Album.'Botanical prints in the 19th-century also focused on the virtues of ferns. Painters from Austria, Paris, France, and England all drew detailed depictions of ferns in their native environments. As technologies improved, these artists rendered ferns in the copperplate medium. During the era of Napoleon, a man by the name of Pierre-Joseph Redoute meticulously painted the flowers in Napoleon's wife's ornamental garden.
