About Carvings

What are some general rules of thumb to ensure excellent, durable wood carvings? First, equip yourself with a complete toolset. This should include a V-tool to 'vein' the wood, at least two chisels (one for fine work and one for broad line cutting), and a gouge to cut out round sections. It may also make sense to gather a mallet and specialized wooden screws for detailed dexterous work. Once you've got all of these tools in place, it's time to select a cut of wood. If you're planning to paint your carving, you can go with a cheaper softwood, such as pine. However, to preserve the delicate features of pine carvings, you need to apply a thick gloss to ensure structural stability. Alternatively, you could carve with a hardwood, preferably oak or chestnut. Walnut, apple, sycamore, mahogany, and even teak can be used in a pinch.Sculpting wood requires not just an artistic understanding of form but also an intuitive sense of the structure of a piece. Each block of wood is different. Veination patterns, knot densities, and thicknesses can range wildly, even within a single piece of wood. Recognize the structural anomalies inherent in your piece before you chip away even an iota of the wood from the block.Carving against the grain is much more difficult and dangerous than carving with the grain. If you're creating delicate nuances, like a bird's beak, carve the elongated sections with the grain of the wood. Examine old, botched wood carvings for cautionary lessons. Some of these pieces may still be intact, but 'against the grain' wear and tear may have rendered them ruined.
