About Drawings

The distinction between drawings and paintings may seem obvious. However, upon closer examination, it becomes harder to determine specifically what differentiates these two forms. Classically defined, a 'drawing' is any image created by the impression of an object on a surface. A painting essentially involves mixing media before application. Thus, a pastel 'drawing' may be multicolored but it's not considered a painting because the pastels were separated prior to being put on paper.Drawing techniques abound. Crosshatching, scribbling, blending, and scratching can all create interesting and unique textures. There's also a phenomenon called automatic drawing, in which an artist closes his eyes and lets his pen or pencil wander along a surface. Drawings can encapsulate everything from photorealistic images of people, places, and events to unconscious and completely nonsensical doodles. Some of the most famous drawings of all time were composed by the French Surrealist, M.C. Escher. His oddball, paradoxical drawings pointed out the absurdity of rational thought. Escher's drawings featured staircases soldered onto ceilings, stairs which perpetually led upwards, and hands drawing other hands drawing other hands. Escher's odd and uniquely riveting style earned him a cult following.Anything can be used to make a drawing. Artists employ paint, pastel, charcoal, crayon, graphite, chalk, and even dirt to create lasting impressions. One general rule of drawing is that the applied material must not be wet or moist. However, in the case of certain pastel drawings, it is acceptable to dampen the tip of an instrument to create fluid strokes.
