About Portrait

The art of portraiture stretches at least as far back as 1,365 B.C. During the reign of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten, a sculptor by the name of Bak depicted himself in a portrait that survives to this day. In terms of modern self-portraiture, the earliest known Renaissance self-portrait is by an artist from France named Jean Fouquet, who did a detailed likeness of himself in the year 1,450 A.D.Attitudes towards portraiture have evolved over time. During the Roman era, state officials wanted realistic depictions of themselves. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, portraiture became more impressionistic. Sitters demanded idealized representations of themselves. In the Middle Ages, particularly in France, portraiture reemerged as a more objective art form. One of the most mysterious portraits and most well-known pieces of art on in the world is Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa.' Almost nothing is known about the woman who sat for da Vinci's portrait. However, in her slightly upturned grin, one can glimpse a very complex, very human emotion. Currently, da Vinci's Mona Lisa resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.During the late 1800s, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh drew a shockingly revealing self-portrait which, along with the Mona Lisa, is one of the most famous works in the entire canon of modern artistic pieces. Of course, yet another kind of portraiture is photographic portraiture, which emerged shortly after photographic technology evolved in the middle 1800s. Early photographic portraits were black and white, and sitters often had to wait 30 minutes to be photographed.
