Baby Bottles

Whether you intend to breastfeed and only want a bottle for certain occasions, or plan on bottle feeding exclusively, your choice of a baby bottle is important. There are a few key things to keep in mind when choosing baby bottles, such as the size of the bottle and its ventilation system. (If your baby doesn't have problems with gas, you may not need a ventilated bottle.) Also, the material of the bottle is important; your choice should be based on whether you are breastfeeding or using formula.To get started on the right foot, it helps to decide what type of baby bottle you want to use before Baby even arrives. By having a supply ready--and taking a few to the hospital with you if you plan on bottle feeding right away--you can prevent nipple confusion, a relatively common problem that occurs when you ask baby to switch from the bottle they are accustomed to, to a different brand or style. Also, by having baby bottles ready at the hospital, Dad gets to be a part of feeding right from the beginning.To start, ask the hospital to use the bottle that you bring exclusively. Most hospitals will be more than happy to accommodate you, although you will need to bring several, and may have to clean them yourself. Given the short amount of time you are likely to be in the hospital, this probably won't be a problem. Once your baby is a little older and understands the ins and outs of eating, you will have less trouble switching from breast to bottle, or between different brands or styles of nipples. When purchasing baby bottles, you may also want to look into related products, such as baby bottle warmers, bottle cleaners, or a breast pump.
