The Hooked on Phonics Series was a tremendously popular educational program designed by Gateway Educational Products. It was first marketed to children during the 1980s as part of a very sticky marketing campaign (all you had to do was dial 1-800-ABC-DEFG). The TV ads became revered and satirized by pop culture during the 1990s. As recently as 2003, the television program South Park satirized Hooked on Phonics with an episode entitled Hooked on Monkey Phonics. In all seriousness, the brand has done much to improve literacy rates and help children with developmental disabilities. Other Gateway Learning Corp. programs include Master Reader, Hooked on Math, and a program designed to improve school success. This program, Hooked on School Success, teaches strategies for test preparation and test taking as well as skills for more effective studying. In 2001, Gateway partnered with a company call KinderCare to promote better study skills in preschoolers. In 2003, the Master Reader program went out to wide acclaim from parental groups and school administrators alike. This program provided advanced help with letter reading skills. Today, a company called Educate Inc. administers the brand, and Hooked on Phonics accessories and web games supplement the work of the main program materials. You can find books, music recordings, and even flashcards from Hooked on Phonics. The company's instructional design paradigm has been copied successfully by other children's education program manufacturers. |
