About Horatio Hornblower

Horatio Hornblower is the well beloved, not overly heroic hero of eleven novels by C.S. Forrester--also famous for writing The African Queen. Hornblower is the central figure in films and television series. He is even said to have been the inspiration for Captain James T. Kirk. The character of Horatio Hornblower has often been compared to that of Captain Aubrey (Commander and Chief) from the Aubrey/Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brien. They are in fact appropriately similar, since both characters are said to be heavily modeled after the very real, very human Admiral Lord Dundonald. (Trivia buffs take note: In the Hornblower novels, the real Admiral Lord Dundonald is represented by the character Lord Cochrane.)If you're a fan of Horatio Hornblower, then you've got plenty of ways to whet your appetite. There are the Mercury Theatre re-enactments of the novels available on audio. You can find the filmed versions of his story, where he is often played by the likes of Gregory Peck. You can curl up with episode after episode of the wildly popular A&E miniseries. But for the most deeply satisfying H.H. experience, there may be no substitute for the eleven novels, written over a period of thirty years. These novels track not only Captain Hornblower's evolution as a commander and a man, but also the lives of dozens of supporting characters. A genuine literary achievement, the Horatio Hornblower novels are certain to delight anyone who loves history, the sea, and good old-fashioned storytelling.
