About Marquis De Sade

The Marquis De Sade, otherwise known as Donatien Alphonse Francois, was a philosophical French writer and aristocrat who believed in a libertarian and libertine sexual ethos. It is from his life and writings that the term 'sadism' comes. Sade grew up in Paris in a castle, and he witnessed intrigue early on; his uncle was sent to prison for frequenting a house of prostitution. After serving military time and fighting for France in the Seven Years War, he came back to the mother county to marry a magistrate's daughter. He and his wife enjoyed off-beat sexual practices, but as a result of his sexual antics, Sade was arrested and sentenced to death. It would not be the first time he would receive the death penalty. After fleeing to Italy, Sade took up with employees and young women at Lacoste before being outed and captured. He was imprisoned numerous times between 1777 and 1790, and the French revolutionaries nearly executed him. Sade wrote some of his most enduring works while imprisoned, and he also put on plays in prison starring the incarcerated. In the early 1900s, Napoleon himself ordered Sade's arrest, but he managed to escape prison thanks to a series of interventions. During the years leading to his death, Sade took up with a very young girl named Leclerc. His controversial persona and works continue to inform literary erotic theory and his story has been told numerous times since, such as in the modern film Quills.
