Since 1888, the National Geographic Society has worked to increase knowledge about geographical and sociological issues around the world. Thirty-three American men who worked as geographers, lawyers, cartographers, financiers, military personnel and more founded the National Geographic Society. To this day, the Society is the largest nonprofit institution catering to educational and scientific issues around the world. Famous Publications In the last few decades, National Geographic has branched into other magazine and television endeavors as well. In addition to the main National Geographic Magazine, others now include National Geographic Kids Magazine, National Geographic Explorer Magazine, National Geographic Adventure Magazine and National Geographic Traveler Magazine. All provide in-depth looks at people, animals and events around the world and emphasize conservation, preservation and appreciation. Circulation is at 10 million people worldwide and the main magazine is translated into 19 different languages. The National Geographic Channel went on air January 1, 2001. The channel specializes in programming that caters to wildlife lovers and travelers, with in-depth shows on everything from mummies to monkeys. In addition to the monthly magazines, this 24-hour cable channel serves as a source of information for millions. The channel's National Geographic documentaries have been nominated for an unprecedented 109 Emmys. |
