When shopping for an air conditioner, you may feel overwhelmed, since there are so many brands, models, and styles to choose from. Two of the most commonly seen air conditioners are window and through-the-wall (TTW) models. Both are quite similar in design, although a TTW air conditioner fits through a hole in your wall and may require professional installation. On the other hand, a window model can generally be installed by virtually anyone. Also available are portable air conditioners. The advantage to using one of these units is the ability to take it with you from room to room. Cool the living room and kitchen while you're awake, and then carry it with you to the bedroom for when you sleep. However, because these devices are portable, they do contain hoses for dispersing hot air outside. Also, many have condensation buckets which need to be emptied quite regularly. Mini-split (or ductless) air conditioners blend central air conditioning units with a typical air conditioner. These devices are broken down into two units: an air handler which sits indoors, and a compressor which sits outdoors. Although these units are more expensive than a TTW or window air conditioner, they are more affordable than central air. In addition, because they require lines for coolant, electricity, and draining, an HVAC professional will need to install this type of system. Many people living in a small one-bedroom apartment choose window-mounted air conditioners. This style can be installed without damaging the apartment, and you can take it with you when you move. These devices are also quite affordable, though those on a budget may want to look into used air conditioners. |
