Scrubs are worn by professionals in the medical professions, especially those who work in a hospital environment. These protective clothes (typically a v-neck top and drawstring or elastic waist bottoms) are regular attire for surgeons, nurses, operating room personnel, and other staff members. Although they were only mandatory for those who worked in surgical environments, today, almost all hospital employees wear scrubs. Some hospitals even color code their scrubs, so that it's easy to distinguish among employees from each department. Scrubs were originally known as surgical greens, referring to the traditional color of the uniforms. However, because surgeons 'scrubbed in' before surgery, these gowns became known as scrubs. (The term 'scrubbing in' refers to the process of making oneself as sterile as possible before entering the operating room.) Today, discount scrubs come in a variety of different colors and patterns. Some of the most popular styles are those that include cartoon characters such as Garfield or Snoopy, and these fun scrubs are most commonly worn in pediatrician's offices. Other scrubs are reversible, with pockets that can be placed on the inside or the outside of the uniform.Discount scrubs aren't just for medical personnel anymore, though. Scrubs can be purchased by regular people for everyday wear or casual pajamas. Because they are designed to be easily washable and comfortable for long hours, scrubs, in a wide range of colors, are quite popular as loungewear.
