Longaberger baskets are designed to be functional as well as decorative. Various baskets can be used for such diverse ends as gardening, organizing, and entertaining. Longaberger baskets are designed to be used as kitchen canisters, bread sets, wine totes, cookie jars, flower baskets, clothing hampers, magazine racks, desk organizers, tissue dispensers, and of course, picnic baskets. The Longaberger Company is a family-owned business based in Newark, Ohio. In addition to Longaberger baskets, The Longaberger Company makes wrought iron, pottery, and even specialty foods. However, the company is best known for their baskets, which are still handmade--just as they were 30 years ago when Dave Longaberger founded J.W.'s Handwoven Baskets'¢. J.W.'s Handwoven Baskets'¢, the predecessor to The Longaberger Company, was named in honor of Dave Longaberger's father, J.W. Once an employee of the Dresden Basket Factory, J.W. opened his own business in 1936. He called it The Ohio Ware Basket Company. Clearly, basket making is a Longaberger family tradition. Today, The Longaberger Company is run by Dave's daughter Tami; his younger daughter, Rachel, runs The Longaberger Foundation. (Since its creation in 1998, the Longabergers say the Foundation has donated millions of dollars to local charities.) Baskets are prized for their functionality as well as their good looks. The simplicity of their design allows Longaberger baskets to complement many different styles of decor, and their warm, neutral color helps them blend with nearly ever type of color scheme. |
