About Overload Relays

Overload relays prevent the overheating of an electrical system by regulating temperature. When running a motor on an electrical system, there is always the danger that the circuit can overwork the motor. When there is too much current flowing through the system, it is possible for a motor to begin to overheat as it draws too much current and generates heat from unused electricity and friction. This overheating can permanently damage the motor or even start electrical fires.To save the integrity of your motor (and everything around it), you can install an overload relay to prevent the motor from ever reaching dangerous temperatures. The simplest overload relays are made of two pieces of different metals that touch to connect the circuit. Since different metals respond differently to heat, there will be separate temperatures at which each piece of metal begins to expand.The overload relay then works by allowing a system to run until it reaches a certain temperature. Overload relays are set for different temperatures, and these are defined by the point at which one of the metals in the device expands so much from the heat that it separates from the other metal. When the two metals no longer touch, the circuit is broken, and the motor will cease to run.An overload relay is an expensive addition to a circuit, but an important one. If your motor is reaching temperatures that can damage it, you need to re-evaluate how you've built your system. Having an overload relay to shut down the circuit when it overheats saves you the hassle of having to replace heat-damaged parts, and spares you the danger of an electrical fire.
