A salt spreader is a machine that helps to melt snow, and is usually used by municipal road departments to keep city streets clear. If snowfall is light, less than a few inches, usually nothing needs to be done; drivers simply need to proceed with caution. However, for continuing or heavier snowfall, a bit of salt spread on the street can dramatically improve driving conditions. You can find salt spreaders in 300-pound capacities, 600-pound payloads, and models that can carry and spread 750 pounds of salt at a time. You can find walk-behind models, 'hopper' styles, hitch mounts, and other types of salt (and sand) spreaders. It's also fairly easy to find replacement parts for your spreader. Western, Fisher, and SnowEx are just a few of the brands of salt spreaders you can find. States such as Michigan and Maine, which are prone to heavy snow and ice storms year in and year out, often keep a number of salt spreaders in municipal garages for quick retrieval. Private homes in these states, too, often have their own salt spreaders that can be attached to a truck or SUV. Although you may never see a salt spreader if you live in California, Florida, or other sunny state, they are a common feature in northern cities. Checking your salt spreader in the early autumn to ensure it's in good working order is a great idea. After all, you don't want to frantically search for parts or service when your home and driveway are icebound! |
