The Dsquared collection began as a modest menswear clothing line in the 1990s. Dsquared was founded by two twin brothers from Canada named Dan and Dean Caten, who utilized both ironic Canadian sensibility and Italian fashion to craft a unique look. Since the line's debut, Dsquared has adorned such stars as Madonna, and it has introduced an element of levity and experimentation to both the womenswear and menswear markets. Dsquared was one of the first fashion houses to catch on to the 'homelessness chic' clothing trend in the 1990s. It also built wardrobes around Harley Davidson chic, playfully mocked Playboy bunnies, and created an homage to prom queens. The Dsquared duo truly has an intimate grasp of the American culture of irony. Yet for all the playful fun, the line focuses on sartorial detail. All fits are energetically assembled based on unifying themes. Thus, despite the outrageousness of some of the Caten brothers' cocktails, the brand's tailoring and stitching is solid. The Catens also enjoy juxtaposing pieces that should not go together. For instance, a model in a neat summer blouse with floral imprints might pair her outfit with baggy Dsquared dungarees. The Dsquared label has proven that it's willing to experiment with a host of fashion components, including ribbon bow ties, Canadian ranger styles, cowgirl accessories, neckerchiefs, suede, and of course, shredded denim. The sex appeal, vitality, and unique sensibility of Dsquared will no doubt help the brand retain its appeal. |
