About Lacoste

The Lacoste brand dates back to 1933, when the famous French tennis athlete, Rene Lacoste, co-founded the apparel company with business partner Andre Gillier. Prior to his success as a designer, Lacoste was a truly ferocious tennis player, a member of the infamous 'four musketeers,' French tennis luminaries who took home all the major titles during the post World War I period.Lacoste's idea was to create a polo shirt that offered moisture-wicking and easy wearability for hot days out on the courts. Remember that at the time, most tennis players wore uncomfortable Oxfords, which caused dehydration and irritation. In reference to his nickname as 'le Crocodile,' Lacoste added a crocodile emblem to all of his white tennis shirts. In the early 1950s, Lacoste began to offer more than just white polos. These colored Lacoste shirts sold rapidly throughout the United States during the 1960s and 1970s as icons of preppy culture. In 1964, Bernard Lacoste, the tennis pro's son, took the company's helm. In the '60s and '70s, the company branched out to design other tennis accoutrements and fashion accessories, including shoes, perfume, umbrellas, and watches. His daughter, Catherine, became one of the most successful amateur golfers in history, and she won numerous titles, including the U.S. Open.Starting at the turn of the millennium, the company hired an avant-garde designer named Lemaire to recast the brand as more luxurious and upscale. Thanks to Lemaire's work, Lacoste polos have witnessed a resurgence in popularity. Today, the company sells nearly 25 million pieces of clothing and apparel each year and brings in more than a billion dollars of revenue worldwide. Popular items include sweatshirts, collared shirts, polo shirts, skirts, slacks, and more.
