About Prada

In 1913, a visionary fashion maverick by the name of Mario Prada created what was to become a legendary worldwide brand. Mario Prada's business began humbly in Milan, Italy. He worked his way up to owning two boutiques by selling designer handbags, suitcases, and shoes. Pretty soon, Prada had gained the attention of fashion luminaries throughout Europe. The company expanded to a global business, and eventually Mario's granddaughter, a political science major by the name of Miuccia Prada, claimed the helm. At the time of Miuccia Prada's takeover, the company primarily sold high quality leather goods. As a result of aggressive marketing pushes by the likes of Gucci and other high-powered fashion houses, Miuccia realized that she needed to advance the Prada mission statement. In 1985, Miuccia unveiled what was soon to become a household name: the Prada handbag. In contrast to earlier Prada suitcases and bags, which were ornate and bulky--a very early model was actually made of walrus skin--the 1985 bag offered simplicity and elegance. Later on in the decade, Miuccia and her fashion team released a number of exciting runway pieces that offered ready to wear comfort, clean fabric lines, and simplicity. By the early 1990s, Prada's star had risen even higher. In 1993, the company was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America achievement. The Prada Sport label engendered praise from a host of typically critical industry watchers. Finally, women's apparel, such as high-heeled shoes, belts, and other sophisticated garments earned Miuccia high praise from a personage no less than the editor of Vogue magazine. Current offerings include men's dress shirts, jackets, skirts, pants, t-shirts, dresses, and suits.
