A prom or promenade is a formal high-school dance generally organized at the end of the academic year in North America and the United Kingdom. Class proms are characterized by an extremely romantic setting, with dancing, eating, drinking and other social activities as the highlights of the event. The event is often a life-changing and memorable one for youngsters, who often end up falling in love and tying the knot. A Prom King and Queen are usually chosen at the end of the event. The music, outfits, food, and decorations generally make these proms exciting, attractive, and lively. Attired in appealing dresses, sporting beautiful jewelry, and wearing their best shoes, the girls try to look their prettiest during these high school proms. The dresses that they wear are, naturally, reflective of their philosophy, culture, class, and family background. During the proms of the Eighties, very fashionable and attractive dresses were worn by the young ladies. The eighties were then an age of 'innocence' and 'sweetness'. Most of the girls dressed up for the proms in flowing dresses that reached their ankles or the floor. The dress had to be chosen according to the kind of dance music played at the prom. Disco music was big in the Eighties, while the popularity of jive was on the wane. The prom dresses would differ in shape, size, and color according to the body type and preferences of the girl. Satin, silk, and velvet were the most common fabrics for these dresses that were trimmed with excellent embroidery, lace, sequins, and even pearls. |
