Lace is an open work fabric, which is light weight and is either hand made or machine made. It originated from repairing of fishing nets and some of the early uses of lace can be traced back to 2000 BC. The manufacturing of lace increased during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and at that time it was handmade. Lace has for long been the symbol of romance and love. Formerly silk, gold, silver, polyester, vinyl, and linen threads were used for lace making, however at present cotton threads are also used. There are various kinds of lace such as needle lace, cut work or white work, bobbin lace, tape lace, knotted lace, crocheted lace, knitted lace, and machine made lace, which can imitate any design or style. Needle lace uses only materials like needle, thread, and scissors, and is time consuming. Its origin dates back to the pre-Christian era. The superior antique needle laces were made from very fine thread. Any of the above kinds of lace can be used for a household lace tablecloth. Lace tablecloths are generally made of Cotton, and vinyl fibers for easy wash and care, in case of accidental spills or food stains. With vinyl material, one can just wipe of the spilled food The lace clothes can also be made of crocheted material. Interestingly, even after several washes a crocheted tablecloth will look brand new, retaining its original shape and color, thus can be used for daily use as well. Lace is considered an emblem of elegance and style, so generally people might use lace tablecloths for special occasions or family gatherings. |
