The Lilly Pulitzer line started because of juice. In 1960, Lilly's then-husband Peter owned citrus groves, and Lilly started her own juice stand to have a project all her own. After staining several items of clothing, she asked a dress maker to create something for her that looked nice, but could easily camouflage juice stains. Soon, Lilly was making juice while dressed in a bright and colorful pink, orange, green and yellow shift dress detailed with lace seams and lining. Lilly's customers began inquiring how they could get one of the dresses she wore, so she had some made and began selling them at her stand. Next thing she knew, she was selling more dresses than juice drinks. She closed the stand and opened her own designer label to make and sell her 'Lilly's.' After her friend, Jackie Kennedy, was featured on the cover of Life Magazine wearing a Lilly Pulitzer classic shift, the brand name exploded. Today, Lilly Pulitzer clothing, shoes, home products and accessories can be found all over the world. The clothing line is very distinct. In the past, some have called Lilly Pulitzer clothing the unofficial uniform for those at play. Characteristically bright and colorful with exquisite lines and form, Lilly Pulitzer dresses and outfits seem to paint a timeless world all their own. Each new season, the Lilly Pulitzer collections that come out have a theme that is somehow related to carefree living and fun inspirations. In the summer and spring, there is never a shortage of floral prints and bright colors, nor flowing skirts and charming classic dresses. In the fall and winter, dark suede, tweed, cord and leather fabrics are accented by bright splashes of color flirting its way in here and there. All the collections from past seasons interchange with each other very well. |
