For new mothers, there are many garments that can help make taking care of your baby easier. Nursing bras, for example, are designed with the breastfeeding mother and child in mind. With flaps made to be pulled down in the cup of the bra, these garments allow you to easily access the nipple to feed your hungry child. Now, instead of having to remove the entire bra or to pull it up into an uncomfortable position, nursing bras have made feeding and pumping easier than ever. There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a nursing bra. First, most experts recommend that you avoid underwire versions, as they can constrict the breast and have been known to cause blocked ducts or mastitis. The best thing to look for is comfort. Some women choose to buy non-nursing bras and opt for a stretchy bra that can be lifted up when breastfeeding. However, nursing bras are designed with your comfort in mind, so these are a superb option for expectant and postpartum mothers. Next, pay attention to the construction of the bra. The flaps should be easy to open with one hand, and shouldn't have any closure mechanisms that could pinch your skin. Many of these bras are made with Velcro, which although easy to open, can be noisy in a quiet environment. Also, make sure that the bra still supports your breast while the cup is open. Bras that open completely in the front can cause problems when you go to reassemble the bra, which can be annoying. Finally, be sure to buy fabric that is breathable. In most cases, this means 100 percent cotton, although blends are recommended, too. Avoid cheap polyesters or other synthetic fabrics that will trap moisture and odor. |
