Tony Magnetic and Martin Ksohoh met while shopping in an exclusive store on the Kowloon Island of Hong Kong in 2001. While shopping, discussions of a Japanese denim brand arose and this encounter resulted in a business partnership. A brand, based on Japanese influence was created and was titled Red Monkey. The designs are constructed of specially modified colored cotton which is woven into selvage denim and then materialized into Red Monkey Jeans. The cotton is harvested from a farm in China and combined with a unique yellow fiber which creates a distinctive feel and color when woven with and dyed with the indigo rope dying method. First introduced in Hong Kong at Crawford Lane, the jeans received a tremendous response from shoppers. Besides the specialty and quality of the jeans, the reason why these jeans are so popular is because of their exclusivity. The jeans are manufactured in small numbers, making them rare and in high demand The embroidered design is pure vintage art which resembles the 50's and 60's designs; the fit is breathable without being baggy. The original Japanese wood block prints embroidered on a traditional five pocket are the main reason why these jeans are so much in demand. As Red Monkey jeans continue to be a huge success in Hong Kong, RMC (Red Monkey Company) gears up to establish itself in the American market. In September 2004, RMC opened their first flagship retail store on the island on Kowloon. Along with Red Monkey Jeans and some accessories, Japanese Evisu, Dupe Clothing from the UK, Tsubi jeans from Australia and a French tailored denim company are also featured in the shop. Since RMC only makes fifty jeans in one design, these jeans are extremely popular but rare. Several celebrities including rap phenomenon Jay-Z can be seen sporting a pair of Red Monkey jeans. Responding to the high demand, RMC will soon start manufacturing in larger quantities to satiate its ever growing fan base.
