Halloween is celebrated on the night of 31st October. Children dressed in costumes go door to door collecting money or sweets in lieu of performing a trick. This festival is commonly celebrated in the Western world, being very common in United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, and the United States. Certain other countries have also embraced Halloween as their culture. The word Halloween is short for All-hallow-even, which is the evening before 'All Hallows Day'. Halloween was also known as All Saints' Eve in Ireland, and is also known as the pooky Night named after the puca who was a mischievous spirit. The holiday was considered a day of religious festivities in European pagan traditions, till it was appropriated, and given a Christian interpretation by missionaries. All Hallows' Eve has a diverse history; the ancient festivals that have influenced our modern Halloween celebrations began thousands of years ago. With the passage of time, various cultural, and ethical influences have blended together to form the present day Halloween; a time to trick, treat and go bobbing for apples, and freaking out at haunted houses. People at a Halloween party generally dress as their deceased relatives, or the most popular- ghosts, witches, mummy, Dracula, vampire, cowboy, Frankenstein's Monster, fairy, Giant baby, and the devil. What sets Halloween costumes apart from any other celebration costumes is that it is designed in a manner to be scary or gruesome. |
