About Coin Collection

Building a coin collection can prove rewarding, both intellectually and fiscally. However, unless you have a lot of disposable capital to waste, you want to set out a coin collection plan prior to investing. Numismatic enthusiasts generally employ one of the following schemes when compiling a coin collection. They collect proofs and/or sets (mostly perfect condition coins). They collect all coins from a particular series, such as Franklin half dollars or buffalo nickels. They go after ancient or foreign coins (seek out diversity). Finally, they look for error coins or rarities. One of the most interesting kinds of error coin is the 'mule.' This is basically an accidental hybrid--the obverse side and the reverse side don't match up. For instance, in 1869, the government accidentally minted an Indian Head penny with two heads. In 1999, a lucky collector found a Lincoln head penny that had the reverse of a Roosevelt dime.Mule traders must be careful not to accidentally pay top dollar for what are known as magicians' mules. Professional illusionists often solder together two heads of a particular coin to 'predict' flips with 100 percent accuracy. While these coins may delight fair-goers, they're worth nothing on the collectors market. You can tell a magician's mule apart from the real McCoy by examining the seem of the coin for microscopic stitching. Some coin collectors look for certain types of striking on coins. These include coins which simply lack a reverse side or coins which depict obtuse or off-angle strikes of their subjects. Also valuable are coins which are struck particularly well. These highly centered coins, or 'lucky strikes' as they're sometimes called, tend to be more valuable when found in mint condition.
