About English Coin

The English have a reputation for fiercely resisting the decimal-ization of their measurements. However, in 1971, the English Mint broke down and adopted a new decimal format for the national currency. The pound, which was previously worth 240 'old' pennies, was now worth 100 'new' pennies. Unlike the United States coin system, which is rather simple, the British coin system reflects an erratic melding of new ideas and deep historical traditions.Up until 1984, the British government actually minted a halfpenny. Yet this denomination was so small and useless in terms of trade that it was finally discontinued. Whereas the United States only mints a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter, a half dollar, and dollar coins, the English coin system is more expansive. Two, three, four, and twenty cent pieces exist in common circulation.British coin curiosities abound in history. The silver shilling, known as a 'testoon' back in the late 1400s, was originally produced by hammering. This tradition dates back at least to the mid 12th century. One of the oldest English coins is, in fact, the silver penny. King Offa is said to have minted silver pennies starting in 757. This was the only coin of the realm for more than 250 years. The years following King Offa's reign weren't the only years in English history when one coin 'ruled the roost.' Under the kingship of Henry the Third, who ruled from 1216 until 1272, the 20 pence coin was the only piece of currency used in trade. Given England's vast and intricate history, English coin collectors get to explore many curiosities. The tradition of coin diversification continues even into modern times--recently, a special coin was minted in honor of the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
