About Lincoln Wheat Cent

The Lincoln cent with a design of wheat sheaves appearing on the reverse was produced in the US during the period 1909 through 1958. The two wheat sheaves flank the coin on either side framing the legends E PLURIBUS UNUM in small letters at the top, ONE CENT in large letters at the center, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in slightly smaller letters below that. The tips of the wheat stalks are among the first elements of the coin to show wear. Some rare or unusual Lincoln wheat coins were issued during the period between 1909 and 1939. The 1909 VDB cent is one that is popular with collectors. VDB refers to the initials of the penny's designer, Victor David Brenner. A relatively small number of coins were minted in 1909 which displayed Brenner's initials in large type on the reverse. The prominence of the initials was felt by many to be offensive, however, and they were removed before the end of the year. The 1909-S VDB is a key date in the series. Another key date is 1914-D. No proofs of Lincoln cents were reported as being minted during the years 1917 through 1935. However, proofs from 1917 are known, and are considered quite rare. Another rarity is the so-called 1922 'Plain' cent, minted in Denver, but displaying no mintmark. The mintmark on this penny didn't appear due to a worn die in the Denver mint. Finally, the 1931-S penny is also considered a semi-key date because fewer than a million were minted.
