About Mint Coin

The condition of collectible uncirculated US coins today is usually graded on a 70 point scale based on one devised by William Sheldon in 1949, with 70 being the highest grade. Uncirculated coins are considered to be in their original mint state, and are sometimes referred to as mint state coins. These coins are graded with designations ranging from MS (mint state) 60 to MS70. Proof coins are mint state coins that were minted for investors and collectors rather than for circulation. Special care is assumed to have been taken in their production. Proof coins are typically brilliant, with a shiny, mirror-like background. The fact that a coin is a proof coin does not automatically determine its grade, although as mint state coins, proof coins are graded 60 or higher. Four elements are taken into consideration when mint state coins are graded. These are eye appeal, luster, surface condition, and strike. Not all graders agree on which element should be given primary consideration when evaluating a coin's grade. Eye appeal is the subjective consideration of the coin's overall appearance. Luster refers to the coin's brilliance. The evaluation of surface condition takes into account imperfections and abrasions on the coin's surface. Finally, strike refers to the sharpness and detail of the coin's design features. Although these four factors give graders a standardized method of judging coins, novice collectors should be aware that a certain amount of subjective judgment necessarily comes into play, and the grade assigned to a particular mint state coin may vary from grader to grader.
