About Morgan

Morgan dollars are some of the most popular collectible coins on the market today. They gain their name from their designer, George Morgan. The story of how Morgan came to design the coin forever associated with him is rife with national and personal politics. There was no great demand by the public for a new silver dollar in the late 1870s. Silver mining interests had political clout at the time, though, and saw the minting of a new silver dollar as a guaranteed market for their output. In 1878, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, which required the US Treasury to purchase silver bullion every month for the purpose of coining silver dollars. Meanwhile, Mint Director Henry Linderman had become dissatisfied with the designs of the Mint's Chief Engraver, William Barber. In search of a more talented designer, Linderman recruited Morgan from England in 1876. Barber was not particularly pleased with Morgan's arrival as Assistant Engraver, and was said to have received him coldly, and denied him working space at the Mint. Morgan's design for a new silver dollar, first produced in 1878, did prevail over a design by Barber that reportedly had the figure of Liberty looking rather fat and dumpy. Morgan's model for his version of Liberty was a schoolteacher from Philadelphia named Anna Williams. The silver dollar bearing her likeness, later to become a collector's favorite, never gained much use in most of the country. William Barber died in 1879, and Morgan ended up toiling at the Mint as an assistant to Barber's son Charles until 1917, when he finally became Chief Engraver. He remained in that post until he died in 1925.
