Numismatics is a term used to refer to coin and currency collecting, and to the study of coins, medals, and currency. Although some draw a distinction between numismatics, which they see as focused exclusively on studying money in its various forms, and collecting, most don't. The word itself is based on a Greek word for coin. People who collect coins are therefore often referred to as numismatists. Coin, medal, and currency collecting provides hobbyists with a unique window into the history of a nation's economy, social values, art, geography, politics, and leaders. Commemorative issues, by their very nature, serve to illustrate and honor important moments or figures from a nation's past. Money, and money policy, are also frequently the subjects of controversy, and are sometimes the engines for social reform. Coin collectors frequently discover, for example, that certain coins or forms of money are rarer because social upheaval, war, or politics interfered with their production during certain time periods. Understanding the history and context of the items they collect often helps numismatists more clearly understand the bases for current market valuations. Numismatists also frequently learn about the artistic craftsmanship and detail that go into producing coins, medals, and currency. Aesthetic appeal is an important part of the value placed on a numismatic item, and a nation's collectible money can be considered a living museum. Individuals who want more information on taking up numismatics as a hobby can contact organizations like the American Numismatic Association, or check in their area for local coin clubs. |
