About Roosevelt Dime

Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in April, 1945 after guiding the United States through two of the most difficult crises of the 20th century, the Great Depression and World War II. Not surprisingly, the American public felt the need for some tangible memorial to him. The Treasury Department decided to honor Roosevelt with a new coin to be issued in time for the next anniversary of his birth on January 30, 1946. The dime seemed the obvious choice. Roosevelt had become intimately associated with the dime in the public's mind due to a campaign to wipe out polio (infantile paralysis) called the March of Dimes. Roosevelt himself had been a victim of infantile paralysis, and he had publicly supported the campaign. The coin was officially designed by Jay Sinnock, then Chief Engraver for the US Mint. Mr. Sinnock's design has faced its share of controversy over the years. One element of controversy is the resemblance between Sinnock's portrait of Roosevelt and an earlier bas-relief of Roosevelt done by celebrated black sculptress Selma Burke. It is plausible that Sinnock did indeed base his design on Burke's bas-relief. Sinnock's initials proved another source of controversy when fears of a Communist conspiracy sparked a rumor that the letters JS appearing on the coin actually stood for Joseph Stalin! The Mint was forced to publicly explain who the initials belonged to. As a collectible coin, the Roosevelt dime is not particularly rare, although very high grade examples of some issues have become quite valuable. There are few notable variations in the series, and completing a mint state collection is not beyond reach for most collectors.
