About Seated Liberty

A Seated Liberty figure appeared on every denomination of US silver coinage at some point between 1837 and 1891. One interesting change in the nation's coinage during this time period was the addition of the words 'In God We Trust.' This motto, presumably a reflection by the nation's anxiety in the face of the impending Civil War, first appeared on US coins in 1864. Consequently, Seated Liberty coins may be identified as being 'with motto' or 'no motto.' The individual most closely identified with the Seated Liberty coins is Christian Gobrecht, an engraver at the US Mint who adapted a Seated Liberty design created by painter Thomas Sully to prepare a dye for a new silver dollar coin to appear late in 1836. Gobrecht dollars produced between 1836 and 1839 are of great interest to collectors because there are relatively few of them to be had. (Although still retaining a seated Liberty figure, dollars from 1840 on had a different reverse design than the original Seated Liberty dollars.) By 1837, the Seated Liberty design was extended to the dime and half dime, and later to the other denominations.Variations abound in the Seated Liberty coins produced. For example, stars representing the states appear on the obverse of a coin in some issues, and on the reverse in other issues. All Seated Liberty coins have some degree of collectible value. Since acquiring complete sets of these coins is beyond the reach of most collectors, some choose to obtain a single coin of each type.
