About Us Proof Coin

US proof coins are struck with more pressure to produce a sharper rim and design than what is used for circulating coins. Proof coinage began as a means of checking the dies and providing coins for the archives. Fortunately, it has been expanded to include coins for numismatists (coin collectors). The proof coins have smoother fields than those of the circulating coins.Chemicals are often used to treat modern US proof coins to give certain parts of the design a frosted appearance. The fields take on a mirror finish, making these coins beautiful collection pieces. Plus, double striking the proof coin gives a distinguishable depth and reflection on the surface. The detail is much more intense than on the circulating coin design. The terms used to describe the depth of mirrors on proof coinage include Cameo, Deep Cameo, and Ultra Cameo. These descriptions come from the frosted foregrounds that give a cameo effect to each proof coin. Proof blanks are treated to enhance the high-quality strikes as they are fed through the presses. The coins are packaged to showcase the beauty and distinction of their exceptional finish.US proof coin grading is quite similar to the system used for grading uncirculated coins. The 'PR' or 'PF' stands for 'proof,' and will be graded with coinciding numbers. For instance, a PR70 is very rare, whereas a PR50 indicates a coin with some wear on the high points. Since the production of proof coins is usually limited, a proof coin is often more expensive than its non-proof uncirculated counterpart.
