About American Saddlebred

The legacy of the American saddlebred dates back to the pre-colonial days. The first settlers to North America utilized hobby horses and Galloway horses to traverse over rough land, assist with farming, and transport goods and services. During the early 18th century, both hobby and Galloway horses where bred with stallions from Arabia, and thoroughbreds were born. The American saddlebred horse became a fixture in the cultural mind. Saddlebreds proved pivotal in battles against British regulars during the revolutionary war. These horses similarly played major roles in the war of 1812. Five years later, in Lexington, Kentucky, one of the earliest horse shows occurred. Two grandsires, a horse named Harrison Chief and a horse named Denmark, created powerful lines from which most American saddlebred horses alive today date back to. Evidence is sketchy, but both the Chief line and the Denmark line may trace back to a single horse named Blaze. The saddle horse proved a trusty steed for General Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War period. In the late 1800s, rivalries (such as the show down between Lou Chief and Miss Rex) blossomed into major regional challenges. One stallion by the name of Rex McDonald received multiple visits from US presidents. Another colt, Bourbon King, who lived at the dawn of the 20th century, was a world-renowned show stallion. In 1917, Kentucky began hosting a world grand championship for American saddlebreds. Winners have included Lady Beautiful, Happy Sybil, and Sweetheart on Parade. CH Belle Le Rose topped the competition in 1933 and went on to national stardom.
