About Animals

Humanity's fascination with animals predates the cave drawings of Lascaux, which are about 15,000 years old. Back then, as we do today, people wanted to preserve images to be seen later, and sketching them onto cave walls was the best way to do it. We now celebrate the animal world by visiting zoos, raising pets, or by collecting them--dead, living, or representational. The hobby of insect collecting is the forerunner of modern entomology, and was very popular until the middle of the 20th century. With hard outer shells that are both durable and colorful, deceased insects are easy to collect and display. In the world of insects, butterflies are the most popular, followed by beetles. Extensive collections of both have been sold at auction for impressive amounts. On the larger end of the spectrum--in both size and cost--are thoroughbred horses. Priced in the ballpark of $25,000, they also require substantial costs in feeding, grooming, and training, making them impractical for many. Collecting animals, though, is not limited to the living and formerly living varieties: animal figurines and iconic symbols (think Disney characters) are the modern representation of our instinctual attraction to the animal kingdom. Whether a dog, horse, cat, or bear, animal figures represent our fascination with and connection to our animal companions. There are literally endless collectibles available featuring our furry (as well as slimy, scaly, or feathered) friends; some examples include mugs, t-shirts, posters, figurines, linens, and even furniture. Dogs are a favorite design theme, and lovers of particular breeds can find endless objects that honor their beloved Schnauzers, Labradors, or Beagles, for example. Humans are like herd animals in many ways, and follow trends--the film March of the Penguins has made penguin collectibles the latest flavor of the month. While Mickey and Goofy will always be worth collecting, cool penguins are hot. Recent online auctions show penguin nesting dolls selling for $15, while penguin beer steins have fetched more than $200.
