The Batmobile is Batman's most valuable weapon in his fight against crime, as he zips through the streets of Gotham City nabbing criminals in the nick of time. It has steadily evolved over the years from an armored Lincoln Futura concept car in the early days, to the ultra-sleek, carbon colored, futuristic spacecraft that the dark-knight drives today. The 'Batman Returns' movie starring Michael Keaton featured the '1989 Batmobile'. A vehicle with a Jet turbine engine to power it from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.7 seconds, the car ran on high octane fuel. An electronic gizmo equipped with aircraft instrumentation, complete with computers and other electronics on the inside, the exterior was covered in 70 coats of black pearl acrylic lacquers. The vehicle's weapons were two Browning submachine guns. Val Kilmer drove the '1995 Batmobile' in 'Batman Forever'. The exterior skeleton encased a glowing blue-white engine, with the cockpit of a spacecraft and wings so vast you would think it could fly. The special features of the '95 Batmobile was its four wheel steering control and the grappling hook that made the vehicle seem that if could defy gravity. This dark machine won the hearts of numerous Batman fans around the world. 'Batman and Robin' saw George Clooney drive through Gotham in the '1997 Batmobile' that had the engine of a Chevy 350 ZZ3 which could reach speeds as high as 350mph, and 6 afterburners in the back produced a V-shaped flame 6 feet long. In 2005, the Tumbler rolled in with its 'half-Lamborghini and half-Hummer' design in the movie 'Batman Begins'. This monster weighs 2.5 tons and is around 15 feet long. Originally a military vehicle in the movie, the Tumbler is loaded with front-firing machine guns and landing hook. |
