Comics
For most collectors of comics, the passion evolved from a childhood love of comic books. They look to the comics they knew as a kid and collect according to their tastes. For those collectors who delve further in, it helps to know the market value of a comic and what it's likely to be if they decide to sell it down the road. The following offers collectors a few basic tips.
Depending on your proximity to a comic book store, you may decide to do some or all of your comics shopping online instead. When buying from other thoughtful collectors, you'll often get the merchandise with the least abuse. With luck, they've preserved it in pristine condition after a quick buy off a shelf.
When you're purchasing comics that you want to hold value, make sure you give them a good look first. If you're purchasing online, stick with the sellers that describe any damage and can give you further information if you ask for it, or better yet, those that can show you an official CGC grade. You want to avoid certain physical faults with the book or artwork, in particular, that will detract from their resale value.
Avoid comics with detectable fingerprints, with white down the spine, or with any folds, tears, or curls. Purchasing online from other reputable collectors is a great way to ensure that you're making a sound purchase. Once you've made your purchases, make sure each is stored in a sealed plastic bag with a backing to protect against damage from the various elements and you'll be well on your way to owning a valuable comic collection.
