About Pinball

Besides being great fun, pinball machines make fabulous collectibles. In the United States, the glory days of pinball machines came in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then, five major pinball companies were running the industry, and most of them were located in Chicago, the pinball capital of the world. From those five companies, only one has survived into the 21st century. But time is not entirely up for those manufacturers whose silver ball went down the drain under the fierce competition created by television and video games. Many of their products are still very popular among lovers of arcade games and gaming collectibles. Pinball players usually enjoy the frenetic pace of the game, and consider that it requires good reflexes, intense concentration, and some strategy. Pinball machine collectors usually love the game, although in some instances they may be attracted to it for other reasons. Thousands of versions of the pinball game have been made over the years. Different manufacturers and designers have been involved in that process, and each one of them means something different to a specialized collector. The features--like bumpers, targets, kickers and ramps--or themes displayed in each individual pinball game are other elements by which collections may be organized. The one surviving American manufacturer of pinball machines hopes to stay alive by targeting the larger European pinball audiences. But while some say that there is a pinball machine in every cafe in Paris, many of the greatest pinball collectors reside within the United States. This is why a vintage pinball machine, any of its parts, or the information to repair, maintain and adjust it will still earn high scores in any collector's list.
