Take a journey into space, the final frontier on the starship Enterprise. The Star Trek TV series premiered in 1966 on NBC with The Original Series, which featured the iconic William Shatner playing the role of Captain James T Kirk. Episodes of the show portray the adventures of Kirk and his crew aboard the ship as they explore the universe and interact with bizarre and sometimes hostile alien civilizations. The show deals with issues such as the role of technology, war and peace, race, religion, political systems and loyalty. Six versions of the series have been released over the years, as well as several spinoffs, films and books. Other iterations of the TV series include The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The most recent series, as of 2013, was Enterprise, which ran from 2001 through 2005. Since the beginning, the show has been a cult phenomenon, as loyal fans, which are also known as Trekkies, can attest. The series is the most popular science fiction show of all time and has also left an enormous impact on popular culture. For example, references to the show can be found throughout popular media including the animated show South Park and the submarine action film Crimson Tide. The show is available on a Star Trek DVD for fans to revisit the adventures of any of the six series at home. Trekkies may also pick up merchandise such as a Star Trek poster or a Star Trek ornament to show their love of the show. A vast number of awards have been won by the show including 31 Emmy Awards.
