About Apple Cupertino

Apple Computer Inc. has headquartered itself in Cupertino, California, ever since its founding in 1976. Indeed, the Apple-Cupertino relationship has become so close that the two terms are now almost interchangeable. Just as foreign reporters use the term 'Washington' to describe the American government, so do technology leaders use the term 'Cupertino' to describe Apple Computer. The 'town gown' relationship has not always been pleasant. During the early heyday of Apple Computer, other companies competed for dominance in the local political and regional arena. Symantec, Portal Software, and other IT startups also founded headquarters in Cupertino. Bickering among these industrial factions led to rows over zoning rules and property taxes. After Apple Computer fell from grace, thanks at least in part to the cult of personality perpetrated by Steve Jobs, Cupertino's economy suffered, and the town experienced a massive 'brain drain.' With the recent restoration of Apple as a major industry player, however, Cupertino has witnessed a renaissance. Property values have skyrocketed over the past few years, and relationships on all sides have improved.Cupertino is a relatively small town, geographically speaking, but traffic congestion leading to and from the town can get quite overwhelming, particularly during big IT conferences. The Cupertino campuses of Apple, Semantic, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and the other big players are, unsurprisingly, high-tech and state-of-the-art. However, town planners have complained that the IT companies basically dictate the zoning rules and tax laws of the town.
