About Athlon64

AMD launched the 64-bit microprocessor, Athlon 64, on September 23, 2003. Codenamed 'ClawHammer', 'Opteron', 'Newcastle', 'Winchester', 'Venice', and 'San Diego', the first eight generation processor implements the AMD64 architecture. Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, and the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 are the three main variants of the original product. The basic difference between the Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 FX is the core processor speeds. The latter is usually one step faster than the other, geared towards a computer hardware enthusiast. The Athlon 64 FX is a single core processor available in the Socket 939 format and recently on Socket AM2. Unlike the Athlon 64 processor, which has its speed multipliers locked (thereby limiting the speeds only up to the default factory set ones), the multipliers on the Athlon 64 FX processors are unlocked. This allows the user to run the processor at speeds higher than the default rated speeds; resulting in increased CPU speed and power. All Athlon 64 processors, including the different variants are designed to run proprietary 32 bit X86, 16 bit and AMD64 software code, allowing maximum flexibility in executing different operating systems as well as software packages. An on-die memory controller runs at the same clock speed as the core itself. This increases the data throughput between the processor core and the system memory due to the shorter physical distance. Most Athlon 64 processors are now manufactured using the 90nm Silicon on Insulator fabrication technology instead of the older 130nm process. The Athlon 64 X2 processor features two processing cores on a single chip apart from other performance throttling enhancements. The processor has two separate execution cores running at same frequencies, fabricated on a single processor chip, making it an extreme performer as well as highly cost and energy efficient. Other enhancements introduced along the Athlon 64 X2 or the 'dual core Athlon' is the No Execute bit (NX bit) function for improving protection from malicious buffer overflow security threats. Such hardware level security functions severely restrict the execution of malicious code, creating a more secure computing environment. The NX bit functions are supported by operating systems such as Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition, and Linux 2.6.8 or higher.
