About Blank Dvd

DVD Recordable or a blank DVD is similar to the structure of a CD Recordable or a blank CD. It uses a chemical dye to record and store data permanently. A DVD offers a larger storage capacity compared to a CD, with a lowest capacity of 4.7GB. Newer developments in technology have increased the capacity to a significant 8.5 GB, offered by a Dual Layer DVD Recordable and the latest Blu-ray standard offering 50 GB of space. The higher storage capacity offered a DVD depends on the smaller size of the pit and track pitch created by the laser beam. The wavelength of a CD-R laser beam measures 780 nm as against 650 nm laser used to record onto a DVD. The newer generation DVD discs, such as the Blu-ray and High Definition (HD) DVD, use an ultra-violet laser beam measuring 405 nm; hence the name 'Blu-ray'. The smaller size of the grooves and the distance between each concentric track enable the laser beam to record more pits onto the disc. Consequently, allowing storing more data on a blank disc of the same size. DVD Recordable is categorized into three different format standards. The first standard developed by Pioneer, called the 'minus' or dash format (DVD-R/RW), is most compatible across most DVD-ROM drives and DVD players. The DVD 'plus' (+) format is developed by Philips and Sony along with the DVD-RW Alliance. Considered to be engineered better by the developers, DVD + R/RW format is less susceptible to interference and errors as it has the ADIP system of tracking and speed control. A better error management system allows for more accurate burning of data to media, irrespective of the media quality. The third standard is the DVD Random Access Memory (DVD-RAM) promoted by the DVD Forum. It was designed for back-up use in the corporate sector, functioning much like a hard-drive by allowing multiple writes onto the media. The DVD-RAM can only be read by compatible drives.
