The mini PC is one of the latest technologies in the computer industry to hit the market. The demand to get more out of less space led to the design of a full-featured computer board that is the same size as a CD ROM drive. The same powerful processors are available as are found in the various desktops or laptops. This small footprint mini PC has features such as USB, LAN, audio, video, and serial accessibility. Some designs include wireless capability, PCI expansion slots, compact flash, and more. Quiet operation is a plus for the mini PC designed without the need for cooling fans. With the aluminum chassis acting as a heat sink, the internal heat is dissipated providing a noise free environment. Technology such as the SBC (Single Board Computers) contributes to the success of the mini PC. This type of functionality is promoted as higher reliability with lower power than the standard motherboard technology. The SBC maintains the functionality of the motherboard, but it is a single plug-in card. There are many configurations available using SBC technology. Mini PC usage is growing in popularity in companies requiring minimal downtime for repairs. Since the SBC is a plug-in device, repairs can be made quickly rather than the extensive amount of time it often takes to find and replace a motherboard in a conventional computer. Even when a motherboard is replaced, there are often difficulties getting the system set up and running properly. With the mini PC, simply switching out a card is often all it takes to be up and running again. |
