Software
Computer software is basically a computer program that can be used on a variety of different machines without much alteration. The word 'software' is used to delineate these programs from computer hardware, which includes the actual physical components of a computer, such as the disc drive, monitor, hard drive, or mouse. Computer software types can include both system software and application software.
System software is the most basic level of computer software. It is the software that organizes your computer (and that usually comes already installed, at least on most personal computers), and the backdrop against which almost all other programs operate. When you create new folders in a windows-based environment, or empty the trash, or shut down, or search your computer, you are most likely using some component of your system software.
In addition to system software, there are many other software programs available. These perform more specific tasks; for example, a piece of word processing software allows you to enter text onto your computer, at which point it can be stored manipulated, and even printed out. Games, spreadsheets, databases and editing programs are other examples of application software.
Once it is installed, application software can usually be modified or deleted as the user desires. System software, on the other hand, is necessary for most computers to operate. In order to get rid of existing system software, a computer user usually needs to find some sort of replacement system software that can take the place of the old version, such as an upgrade.
