In order to connect devices to a computer, most people use a USB cable. These versatile cables allow a wide variety of optional external devices, known as peripherals, to be used by a computer. Some of the more common peripherals requiring the use of a USB-specific cable are scanners, printers, and webcams. USB cables are most commonly used with computers. However, a growing number of electronic products are now being outfitted with USB ports, making these cables even more versatile. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all designed their new video game systems to be USB compatible. In addition, many PDAs, televisions, and home stereo systems now have USB ports installed. The two connectors on a USB line may look the same at first glance, but they are in fact very different. There are two different kinds of USB connectors--type A and type B. The type A connector is always used at the host end, meaning it is plugged directly into the computer or video game system, while the type B connector is inserted into the device. These connectors are mechanically incompatible, so it is important to always make sure to use the correct end when making a connection. In addition to the traditional type B connector, there is also a mini-B connector. This is a relatively new type of connector, used primarily with small devices, such as mobile phones or PDAs. Although significantly smaller than the traditional type B connector, the mini-B is similar to its sibling in that a regular-sized type A connector will always be at the other end of the cable.
