About Dreamcast

Originally known as Standard Games, then Service Games, Sega Corporation is known internationally as one of the pioneers in the video gaming market. With 8 consoles and 4 handheld consoles under their belt, Sega has had its fair share of success. Launching its first console in 1985, The Master System was technically superior to its competitor, the Nintendo Entertainment System. After releasing two upgraded versions of the Master System, and in the following years - the Sega Genesis, and the Sega Saturn, Sega released its last console in 1999, the Sega Dreamcast. The 128-bit Dreamcast was again technically superior to its competitors, the Sony Playstation and the Nintendo 64 when released. With a Hitachi SH4 processor powered by a PowerVR graphics processor, The Dreamcast was designed to be the best console at that time. Codenamed 'White Belt', the Dreamcast was the first console to include a built-in modem and Internet support for online gaming. In the United States, a record 300,000 units were pre-ordered even before the release of the console and 500,000 units sold within two weeks. Currently, there are 276 Dreamcast games available, 32 games rated for 'Mature' audiences, 93 for 'Teens', and 151 for 'Everyone'. From all the games, the 'Sonic Adventure' series of games, only released for Sega Dreamcast, were among the most popular. Although 50 to 60 games were still in production, after facing stiff competition from the superior Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox, Sega discontinued the production of the Dreamcast on January 31, 2001. NHL 2K2 which released in February 2002, was the last title released for Dreamcast in North America. The standard Dreamcast console was made of white and gray plastic, however a black Dreamcast unit included a sports pack and two Sega Sports titles was released in limited numbers.
