The Zenith Electronic Corporation is a known manufacturer of televisions. The headquarters of Zenith is based in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Zenith is credited with the invention of the remote control. Zenith had also introduced an HDTV in North America. Zenith went from becoming a mere investment venture for LG Electronics in 1995 to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of the electronic giant in 1999. In 1918, Karl Hassel and Ralph H. G. Mathews started producing an amateur radio at the Chicago Radio Library, which was also founded by them. The brand name, Zenith ('Z-Nith', as it was previously named) came from their small Chicago Radio station 9ZN. Hassel, Mathews, and an investor Eugene F. McDonald Jr., established the Zenith Radio Corporation in Chicago, Illinois in 1923. This small firm soon became a large factory covering 3600 blocks at South Iron Street. In 1924, the company started the manufacturing of radios. With the beginning of 1926, the company introduced the first home radio receivers, which operated on AC power, in contrast to the radios of the time, which worked on batteries. By 1927, Zenith Radio introduced a new radio model, which featured a push-button tuning. In the same year, their first slogan was announced; 'The Quality Goes In Before The Name Goes On'. In mid 1930s, the Zenith Radio had employed around 450 people. During World War II, the company expanded itself and started manufacturing bomb fuses and other military devices. By the end of the 1940's, Zenith started manufacturing televisions. In 1970, Zenith had around 12,000 workers and entered the global market. The company marketed its last radio in 1982, and in the same year it changed its name to 'Zenith Electronic Corporation'. |
