About Ceramics Pottery

The art of pottery making is as old as human history itself. Pottery has been found among artifacts discovered at the campsites and settlements of ancient peoples. This craft remains popular today, and while ancient techniques are still used, pottery makers strive to find new expressions for their work, giving their pieces a modern sensibility while retaining the traditional earthy look and feel of this unique art form.Like many ancient arts, pottery is made in a process that utilizes a few simple tools and materials that are readily available in nature. The basic steps are clay preparation, vessel construction, surface treatment and firing. Pottery makers can either purchase fine clays that are ready to use, or prepare the clay themselves by sifting and tempering it with sand or crushed rock. Tempering keeps the clay from shrinking and cracking during firing in a ceramics kiln. To construct a vessel, water is added, and the potter either throws the clay on a pottery wheel or shapes it using forms like ceramics molds. Several techniques for shaping clay are used in pottery. Coils of clay can be wound to create a shape, then scraped smooth for the final form. A paddle and anvil can be used to thin the clay walls from the outside while pressing on the inside to create the final shape. Pinching the clay into small pots is a simple way to produce an unsophisticated but highly functional vessel for a multitude of uses. Pottery finishes are achieved with tools and additives that make rough, smooth, textured and polished surfaces. Slips are ceramic overlays, added before firing to give the potter a surface on which to paint or create a design. Glazing then seals the clay for firing, which hardens the piece and makes it safe and durable for daily use. Pottery was an essential part of life for almost all cultures for thousands of years, and continues to provide modern man with both function and an opportunity for artistic expression.
