Cross Stitch

Cross stitch is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Even children can do this kind of needlework using kits that contain simple patterns. In fact, many adults share fond memories of their first craft projects, often involving little round cross-stitching frames. This craft has been in use at least since medieval times, and it is a form of counted-stitch embroidery. This means that the cross stitcher counts the threads in each direction to ensure that the pattern is evenly placed within the frame, and stitches are of uniform size.

When one creates a counted cross stitch picture, the pattern is usually on graph paper. The stitcher makes X-shaped stitches to form the picture on a cotton or linen cloth. Specialty cross stitch cloths will denote the number of threads per inch, and this affects the size of the picture. The most common cloth used for cross stitch is cotton floss, a mercerized cotton product that contains six threads that are only loosely twisted together.

Cross stitch is traditionally used to embellish items such as clothing and accessories. However, modern cross stitchers often frame and hang their works as art. When using fine thread and small stitches, cross stitching can form very realistic pictures, and an experienced cross stitcher will often create completed pieces that are mistaken for paintings.

More recent innovations in cross stitching includes the incorporation of beads and decorative specialty threads into the work. Unusual stitches are also becoming popular, as variations of the cross stitch are used to create special effects. Cross stitch kits for both children and adults make it easy to get started.
